College Football

Johns Hopkins 36, Dickinson 34

The Dickinson College football team rallied but came up just a two-point conversion short in one of the biggest comeback attempts in school history. It was truly a tale of two halves Friday night.

Johns Hopkins (4-2, 2-2 conference) opened up a 19-0 lead at halftime and held off a furious charge by Dickinson for a 36-34 win.

Junior wide receiver Pat O’Connor went his own personal assault on the Dickinson College record book, leading the charge with three school records. O’Connor finished with school records for receiving yards in a game (238), all-purpose yards in a game (396) and tied his own mark with 12 catches. He tallied 137 yards on kick-off returns, the second-highest single game total as well.

Junior quarterback Ian Mitchell threw for a career-best 323 yards, the second-highest single game total, and had four touchdown passes.

The Blue Jays went in front 3-0 in the first quarter on an Alex Lachman field-goal from 39 yards out. He added a 32 yarder in the second before a pair of touchdowns by Andrew Kase gave Hopkins a 19-0 advantage at the break.

Kase scored again at the 5:40 mark of the third and Lyndon O’Connor broke for a 69-yard touchdown to make the score 33-0 with 4:21 remaining in the quarter.

Mitchell connected with O’Connor for a 30 yard scored to close out the third quarter, and the Devils (3-3, 2-2) came alive. Mitchell found O’Connor again from 21 yards out to cut the deficit to 33-14.

The Devils dropped a kick into the corner that was mishandled and recovered by Michael Maxwell on the Hopkins’ eight yard line. Mitchell dove into the endzone on fourth down from the two to pull the Devils within a pair of TD’s at 33-21 with 9:02 remaining in the game.

The Devils still weren’t done. The defense held and Dickinson took over on its own 29-yard line. Mitchell hit junior tight-end Gray Gish, who rambled in from 36 yards out.

The Devils held Hopkins to a field-goal as Lachman hit a career-long 46 yarder to make the score 36-28 with 2:59 to play.

Dickinson is off next week before hosting Gettysburg at 1 p.m. on Oct. 25.
