A man pretended his car had broken down to burglarize a Perry County woman’s home Friday, according to state police at Newport.

The woman lives in the 6200 block of Spring Road in Carroll Township, police said, and a thin white male in his early to mid 20s showed up at 2:45 p.m. and told her that his vehicle was broken down next to a bar on Route 34 and asked if he could use the phone.

The woman got the number from him and said she would make the call while he waited outside, police said, then moved to the back of the home to make the call. While she was doing so, the man forced open the storm door, entered the home and took the woman’s purse, which contained cash and various forms of identification, police said.

The man had long black hair, possibly in a ponytail, police said.

Police ask anyone with information on the theft to call 567-3110 and reference incident H5-1797709.
