Shippensburg football quiet after halftime
The Shippensburg University football team held a 7-6 halftime lead over the Golden Rams of West Chester, but could not sustain that momentum in the second half, falling 25-7 on Saturday afternoon at Farrell Stadium.
Shippensburg (3-5, 2-3 PSAC East) took the lead late in the second quarter when red-shirt junior Chad DiFebbo found red-shirt junior Mike Harris in the back corner of the end zone for a three yard touchdown with 1:00 remaining in the half.
West Chester (6-2, 5-0 PSAC East) would answer by driving the length of the field in 45 seconds, culminating in a Joe Wright 18-yard touchdown pass to Mike Washington. West Chester would muff the extra point attempt and the Red Raiders took a 7-6 lead into halftime.
DiFebbo finished the afternoon completing 10-of-20 passes for 150 yards and one touchdown and one interception and has now thrown a touchdown in all eight games this season. He also ran nine times for 32 yards.
The leading tackler for Shippensburg was redshirt senior Josh Oswalt (Cumberland Valley), who recorded ten tackles on the afternoon including one for loss.
Shippensburg will return to action next Saturday afternoon as they host the No. 6 Bloomsburg Huskies for Homecoming.
Women’s Soccer
Bloomsburg 2, Shippensburg 1 (OT)
Senior keeper Beth Long made seven saves and sophomore Amanda Greenawalt scored her fifth goal of the season, but it was the visiting Huskies of Bloomsburg that scored a goal with 3:25 remaining in double overtime to earn a 2-1 victory in a crucial PSAC Eastern Division matchup Saturday night from David See Field.
Shippensburg (9-7, 3-6 PSAC East) allowed a goal in the seventh minute of the game from Lauren Hess but answered with Greenawalt’s goal in the 16th minute off an assist from junior Gayle Kuntzmann. The Lady Raiders held a 9-4 shot advantage in the first half.
Bloomsburg (11-3, 6-2 PSAC East) took over the momentum in the second half, out-shooting Shippensburg 17-3 before overtime and 21-5 over the final 60 minutes. Kristine Preski scored the game-winner for the Huskies on a loose ball in the crease.
Shippensburg returns to action on Tuesday in a 4:30 p.m. match from David See Field against PSAC Eastern Division opponent Mansfield.
Dickinson 5, Bryn Mawr 1
The Dickinson College women’s soccer team improved to 8-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference with a 5-1 victory over Bryn Mawr on Saturday.
Five different players scored for the Devils, led by first-year Sarah Montminy who tallied a goal and two assists.
Montminy put the Devils on the board, scoring unassisted in the 33rd minute. She assisted junior Sarah Casey on the game-winner in the 55th minute.
Just over two minutes later, Sara White (Gettysburg) gave the Devils a 3-0 lead with an assist from first-year defender Brenna McKelvey.
Jillian Forde spoiled the shutout in the 61st minute with an assist from Laura Costanzo.
Sophomore Ashley Kunkle closed out the game with a pair of assists, feeding Casey for her second goal of the game in the 78th minute and junior Courtney Anderson in the 82nd.
Kailyn Hartmann made a pair of saves in 86 minutes of action. Collette Pullion stopped 14 shots for the Owls (4-9-1, 0-7).
The Red Devils travel to Franklin & Marshall to face the Diplomats at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
Women’s field hockey
Dickinson 8, Bryn Mawr 0
The Dickinson College women’s field hockey team had little trouble Bryn Mawr on Saturday, posting an 8-0 shutout against the Owls (1-12, 0-8).
Katelynn Bias (Mechanicsburg) put the Devils on the board just 5:53 into the game, scoring on a penalty corner with an assist from Ali Brant.
Brant struck with back-to-back goals on a pair of assists from Alyssa Sands to put the Devils in front 3-0 with 26 minutes remaining in the half.
Lauren Kelly tacked on an unassisted goal right before the half. Sands opened the second half with a goal just 2:15 after the break.
Katie Mersky and Bias each added a goal and an assist, and Sands scored again down the stretch for the final tally. Sands finished with two goals and two assists on the afternoon.
Amanda West and Ketelyn Repash shared the shutout. Repash made three saves. Elizabeth Toft stopped 15 shots for Bryn Mawr.
The Red Devils improve to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Franklin & Marshall for a 4:30 start on Tuesday.
Men’s Cross Country
The Dickinson College men’s cross country team finished second at the Inter-Regional Rumble, hosted by Oberlin College on Saturday.
Junior Greg Leak was second overall with a time of 24:45 on the 8k course. Nick Karwoski placed eighth, crossing in 25:01, followed by Brian Krusell in ninth with a time of 25:04.
The Red Devils will compete at the Centennial Conference Championships at Gettysburg on November 1st.
Women’s Cross Country
The Dickinson College women’s cross country team placed fourth at the Inter-Region Rumble, hosted by Oberlin College on Saturday.
Senior Darcy McDonald finished 12th to lead the Devils, crossing the line in 22:08.
First-year Catherine Campbell (Trinity) came in 22nd (22:37), followed by Kimberly Powell in 30th with a time of 22:57.
Men’s Soccer
Dickinson 4, Haverford 1
The Dickinson College men’s soccer team improved to 10-4 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial Conference with a 4-1 victory at Haverford on Saturday.
Six players marked the scoring column, led by Mike Montross with a goal and an assist.
Montross assisted first-year Ben Gemberling-Johnson just 12 minutes in to put the Devils on the board.
Dale Rodman netted the game-winner with an assist from Zach Pritchard in the 19th minute.
Thomas Parkinson put the Devils in front 3-0 at the break, scoring unassisted in the 26th minute.
Montross closed out the scoring for the Devils in the 72nd minute with an assist from Kevin Riley.
Panos Panidis spoiled the shutout with a Haverford goal in the 84th minute of the contest.
Women’s Volleyball
Dickinson 3, Bryn Mawr 0
The Dickinson College women’s volleyball team swept a Centennial Conference match from Bryn Mawr on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils captured a 25-18 decision in the opening set and turned back the Owls 25-20 in the second. Bryn Mawr put up a fight in the final set before falling 26-24.
Junior Ely Gosheva led the attack with 11 kills. She added 10 digs, a pair of aces and three blocks.
Kristen Lee added eight kills to go with three aces and 11 digs.
Amanda Hayes led the Devils with 14 digs while Amanda Lehn served four aces and dished out 30 assists on the afternoon.
