Boiling Springs came into Friday night’s game with a three-game winning streak and looked to make it four as it hosted Camp Hill.
And while the Bubblers made it close, eventually it was the Lions that pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 25-13 victory.
Camp Hill (2-1 Patriot, 7-2 overall) fell behind early as the Bubblers took their first possession 55 yards for a score. It took 10 plays and four penalties but Derek Behrenshausen found Zane Frederick on a fly pattern in the back left corner of the end zone on fourth down for the score. Drew Newcomer hit the extra point for the 7-0 lead.
Camp Hill moved the ball on its second possession but found the going tough when it was whistled for two penalties. Tyler Shover overthrew Taylor Berrian in the end zone and Dakota Kuhn made a defensive play on fourth down for the Bubblers.
“We are normally a passing team and everyone knows it, but sometimes it isn’t working so we have to go to our running game“ said quarterback Tyler Shover. “Our line made the holes for us and the running backs cut off the blocks and we were able to make the plays. They are not a big team but they play hard and will surprise teams. We shut some of their offense down and we came out with some heart the second half. We were very frustrated on defense after the first drive and it kind of shocked us. We coped with it and did what we had to do.”
The Lions closed the gap in the second quarter as they followed Shover to the promised land. He carried the ball on six of the eight plays, covering the final eight yards for the score. Neil Gallagher’s point after hit the right upright and bounced back on the field.
Boiling Springs (1-3 Liberty, 4-5 overall) worked the ball down the field on its next drive but it died as the Bubblers were hit with an illegal substitution flag that created a second-and-15. On third down, Behrenshausen was sacked by Peter Anastasio for another five yards.
After each possession resulted in a punt, the Lions finally added to their total. They resorted to a backyard play and utilized the old hitch and pitch as Shover threw an 8-yard strike to Matt Spiegel, whose lateral led the ball to Jordan Weber who rumbled another 27 yards to set up the Lions at the five-yard line. Two plays later, Shover followed Chuck Thurner-Diaz for the score. A two-point conversion pass went incomplete.
Boiling Springs next possession resulted in an interception by Polly who returned the pick 16 yards to the Bubbler 46. On first down, Jon Keller wrapped up Shover for a sack but the officials ruled he had the face mask so the play was wiped out and gave the Lions a first down at the 40-yard line. Two Shover runs and a Shover-to-Weber pass completion gave the Lions the first down at the five. Shover snuck over for the third of his four touchdowns.
Boiling Springs responded behind the running of the Jakes — Starner and Grove. Grove had 37 yards on the drive and Starner campered 27 yards up the middle for the score. They attempted a two-point conversion. The pass to Frederick was complete but he was tackled immediately by Anastasio.
The Bubblers then attempted an onside kick and actually recovered the kick, but they were called for touching the ball prior to it going 10 yards. The Lions eventually ran out the clock, but it took a key fourth-down conversion by Shover. He rolled left and followed Tyler Freeman, who held his block long enough for Shover to get around him. Shover scored his final touchdown with 8.8 seconds left from 1-yard out.
“Boiling Springs played a good game,” said Lion coach Frank Kindler. “We were trying to take what they were giving us. They had a really nice game plan. We didn’t have a good first half, but that was because of the things Boilings Springs was doing. I was really impressed with the job that he (Matt Heiser) is doing with them. We caught them at a bad time for us, but fortunately we were able to get by them. We’ll take any win. Sometimes we have some mental lapses but we’ll take a win.”
“Our kids did good job of playing together tonight but we just came out on the short end,” said Bubbler coach Heiser. “They came out with a different front after the half and it caught some of our younger players off guard. Camp Hill can run the ball with Shover and Jordan in the backfield. We played a very physical game and played very well tonight. The third-down pass to Weber was a key play, as was the fourth-down run by Shover.”
Jake Grove and Aaron Marks each had 11 tackles for the Bubblers. Keller had two tackles for losses.
Boiling Springs closes out the season next Friday on the road at James Buchanan. Camp Hill ends their season at Steelton-Highspire next Friday.
