Dickinson football falls just short of upset

The Dickinson College football team did just about everything it could to knock-off No. 2-ranked Muhlenberg on Saturday afternoon. The Mules held on and remained unbeaten on the season at 8-0 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Mules escaped with a 31-25 decision, scoring 21 points in the opening quarter.

The Red Devils struck first, taking the opening kick-off 70 yards on nine plays, capped by a 29 yard touchdown pass from Ian Mitchell.

Muhlenberg put the ball in the hands of running back John DeLuca, who sandwiched a pair of scoring runs around a Phil Cresta 46 yard touchdown reception to put the Mules in front 21-7.

Sophomore kicker Gordon Craig split the uprights from 26 yards out to cut the margin to 21-10 early in the second quarter.

Junior Gray Gish blocked a punt in the endzone that led to a safety to make the score 21-12 with 12:42 remaining in the half. Mitchell led the Devils on a 78 yard drive, scoring on a 31 yard run to cut the deficit to 21-19 at the break.

Both defenses held strong through a scoreless third quarter. The Mules stretched the lead to 28-19 with just 7:22 remaining as Erik Snyder went over the top from the one yard line.

Tim Wells broke free around the right side to score from 31 yards out. The extra-point failed, making the score 28-25, Muhlenberg with 5:45 to play in the game.

Sophomore Pat McNeal recovered a fumble on the ensuing kick-off, giving the Devils possession on the Mules’ 47 yard line. Brandon Doyle stalled the Devil drive with an interception at the 22 with 5:02 on the clock.

Dickinson held Muhlenberg to just a field-goal, looking for one last shot, trailing 31-25 with 2:23 left to play.

The Devils moved the ball to the Muhlenberg 44 yard line but were unable to convert on fourth down, allowing the Mules to run out the clock and hold on for the win.

Mitchell completed 19-of-34 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown while running for 92 yards and another score to lead the offense. Classmate Pat O’Connor went over the century mark again with 109 yards on eight receptions, adding 95 yards on kick-off returns. Senior Rob Kutner made three catches for 41 yards as well.The Red Devils slip to 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Juniata College for a 1:00 kick-off next weekend.

Shippensburg 62, Cheyney 7

The Shippensburg University Football Team posted its most points since the 1999 season with a 62-7 victory over visiting Cheyney on Saturday afternoon at Seth Grove Stadium.

Shippensburg (4-6, 3-4 PSAC East) exploded for 555 yards of total offense, including 345 rushing yards. The Red Raiders also scored five touchdowns through the air.

Red-shirt junior Chad DiFebbo finished 12-of-17 for 186 yards with a career high four touchdown passes.

Cross Country

Red Devil men topple Haverford for CC title

The Dickinson College men’s cross country team has been chasing down Centennial Conference rival Haverford for many years. On Saturday the Red Devil men ran past the ‘Fords to win their first conference title in the 16 year history of the CC.

The Red Devils placed five runners in the top seven, led by individual champion, Greg Leak, who finished with a time of 25:37.

The Devils combined for 23 points to finished 21 points ahead Haverford, who’s streak ends with 15 straight titles. Leak claimed the first individual conference gold for the Devils as well.

Devil women second at CC championships

The Dickinson College women’s cross country team placed second at the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by Gettysburg College on Saturday. The Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins captured their first conference title, scoring 49 points to best the Devils’ 83.

The Devils have finished first or second in every championship since 1996 and had won eight staight titles from 2000 through 2007. This season marked one of the most competitive environments in recent history for both the men’s and women’s races.

Swimming

Dickinson women 162,

Elizabethtown 43

The Dickinson College women’s swimming team opened the 2008-09 season with a decisive 162-43 win at Elizabethtown on Saturday.

Devil men splash

Elizabethtown 158-36

The Dickinson College men’s swimming team swam to a 158-36 victory at Elizabethtown College on Saturday. The Red Devils claimed nine of 11 events on the afternoon to start the season 1-0.

Senior Eric Florio won a pair of individual events, claiming the 200 freestyle (1:55.22) and the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:14.11.

Women’s Soccer

West Chester 3,

Shippensburg 2

The Shippensburg women’s soccer team held an early 1-0 lead over the No. 9 Golden Rams of West Chester and were within one goal in the second half but could not record another upset, dropping a 3-2 decision in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.

Shippensburg (11-8-1, 4-7-1 PSAC East) concluded the regular season with its most successful season in 11 years. For third-year head coach Rob Fulton, the 2008 season provided the most wins for the Lady Raiders during his tenure and the most for Shippensburg since the team finished 13-6 in 1997 under Guy Furfaro.

Sophomore Amanda Greenawalt gave the Lady Raiders an early 1-0 lead with a goal just 89 seconds into the game off a corner kick. Greenawalt finished the season with seven goals in 20 games and has now totaled 13 goals in two seasons with the Lady Raiders.

Women’s Volleyball

Shippensburg 3,

Kutztown 2

The Shippensburg University volleyball team earned a crucial 3-2 victory on Saturday afternoon in a road match at Kutztown inside Keystone Hall. The victory keeps the Lady Raiders in third place with a 6-4 mark in PSAC East play, while Kutztown falls to fifth place with a 4-7 divisional mark.

Shippensburg (19-15, 6-4 PSAC East) was paced by the outstanding play of freshman Caitlin Marshall, who posted a double-double with 11 kills on just two errors along with 13 digs. She also delivered two service aces.
