Kathy’s Deli of Shippensburg donated a catering session Tuesday night at the site of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” in the Fayetteville region in Franklin County.

Kathy Pugh said she was called some time ago and asked if she would be interested in providing a meal to one of the crews. She wasn’t sure, because all she was told about the location was that it would be within a one-hour drive of Frederick, Md. Pugh was interested, but not eager to drive an hour south of Frederick, which is outside of the region where she normally does business.

Once she found it would be closer to Hagerstown, where she does do business, she signed on for the project. The site in Quincy Township turned out to be about 20 miles from Shippensburg.

Although her employees were already stressed because the deli is in the midst of an expansion into another section of the building it leases near Memorial Park, the workers were enthusiastic about the project.

Pugh donated the food for the catering session. She has asked her vendors for donations or discounts, and Martin’s Potato Chips came through with chips. Pugh paid her employees for the food preparation time, but the employees who went to the Extreme Makeover site donated those hours.

“They were the ones who were so excited about doing it,” she said. The teenaged children of one employee helped with the serving as part of their community service project for school. “I thought that would be the coolest community service project in the world,” Pugh said.

The menu for the evening included Italian meatball subs, vegetable trays, chips, cookies and beverages. She also handed out coupons, which will have a construction theme.

The television show has a Web site that will link to the deli site, where the coupons will be available.

Meanwhile, the process of planning the expansion, obtaining the permits and doing the construction continues. Pugh expects the larger premises to officially open sometime in January.
