Alex Pletcher made quite a haul at his recent 5th birthday party, but the toys were few and far between.

Most of the youngster’s gifts were dog food. Several others were blankets. The few toys turned out to be designed for canines.

That’s just the way Alex wanted it.

“I didn’t need any toys and I wanted the animals to stay alive,” says the son of Daryl and Rebecca Pletcher of Southampton Township, Cumberland County.

Guests at the birthday bash were asked to bring dog food, and they responded in the same spirit Alex shows.

The gifts made a mountain of various food and treats destined for the Better Days Animal Shelter.

“I was overwhelmed by the amount of food the kids brought,” Rebecca Pletcher says. “We only had about eight kids at the party.”

Pletcher says she and her husband discussed birthday gift alternatives with Alex and he jumped at the chance to help animals. The family has two dogs — Roger and Ichabod.

“When we explained there were dogs without mommies or daddies, he wanted to help,” Rebecca Pletcher says.

When delivering the canine booty to the Better Days no-kill shelter, the 5-year-old reveled in the company of the animals and took particular pleasure in meeting Goliath, a mammoth English mastiff.
