Students dug into their pockets to raise money for King’s Kettle, the Shippensburg food pantry, as part of a fundraiser that would put a Shippensburg Area Senior High School teacher or administrator into a turkey costume the day before Thanksgiving.
Assistant Principal Andrew Norton got the honor.
Walking was a bit slower than usual for him, because the feet had flaps on the sides that flopped around and the red leggings tended to slide down. Norton’s face was almost hidden by the head of the turkey costume, but students knew who he was anyway.
The Key Club at the high school, an affiliate of Kiwanis, raised $643 for the “Turkey Teacher” fundraiser and another $168.10 from a bake sale at the Little Brown Jug football game in October between Shippensburg and Big Spring high schools.
The club advisers presented checks totaling $811.10 to J.R. Wells of King’s Kettle on Wednesday.
Wells said about 270 Thanksgiving baskets have already been distributed by the food bank, but the need continues throughout the year.
Students enjoyed commenting on the principals’ costumes.
Most comments were general, but one student told Levy he looked like Elmer Fudd in his hunting cap.
As Levy turned into a corridor where a staff member was on a ladder doing some maintenance, an Elmer Fudd-like voice repeated a line from the cartoon: “We have to be vewy, vewy quiet.”
Levy heard the comment, laughed and moved on. Another student told Levy he preferred the hat he’d had on earlier.
Levy spent part of the school day wearing a fake-fur hat shaped like turkey drumsticks, complete with white paper frills on the ends.
