Angel Food baskets help the hungry
From a 1 1-2 pound choice cut beef roast to a lemon meringue pie for dessert, Angel Food customers packed their December food baskets with steaks, chicken, pork, vegetables, eggs, milk and staples like rice, chicken broth, a muffin mix, and macaroni and cheese to help fill their pantries for the month.
Every basic box, which costs $30, is packed with protein and is top quality food. Just in time for Christmas, customers also purchased gift boxes of meat and cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables.
For seniors, or people on the go, Angel Food recently introduced a convenience box with 10 fully cooked meals — just heat and serve. The meals, which cost $28, are developed with dietary needs of senior citizens in mind.
Each month 500,000 families in 35 states are able to put quality food on the table for about half the cost in a grocery store. The dollars one can save purchasing Angel Food will help pay the high costs of other monthly expenses.
More than 250 families from the Carlisle area take part in the ministry at Otterbein United Methodist Church each month. A recent letter received from a customer stated: “My daughter and I picked up our Angel Food purchases on Saturday, and I was really impressed with the volunteers. Not only were they organized and friendly, but they were non-judgmental. I went with my daughter expecting to be treated like a welfare recipient but was pleasantly surprised by the true Christian attitudes that I witnessed.”
Otterbein United Methodist Church, 647 Forge Road, Carlisle, opened its doors and heart to the ministry in April 2007 and continually reaches out to more people. January orders will be taken at the church from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, and from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Jan. 10. Angel Food accepts cash, money orders and food stamps.
