County beekeepers demonstrate honey extraction at farm show
If there’s a large crowd gathering on the main stage of the Culinary Connection area of the Pennsylvania Farm Show, the odds are good that the audience is watching a honey extraction demonstration from the Pennsylvania Beekeepers Association.
Silver Spring Township resident and president of the Capital Area Beekeepers Association Jim Hoover led the extraction demonstration with help from Lower Frankford Township resident and fellow association member Tom Jones.
The two men showed the crowd how they get honey from the honeycomb, even extracting a bottle of honey that the audience was able to taste test at the end of the demonstration.
The two hobbyist beekeepers also gave some advice and answered some questions for interested people looking to take care of a hive themselves.
Taking care of bees isn’t really a moneymaker, Hoover admitted, but he said a lot of people are getting more interested in taking care of their own bees in conjunction with keeping their own gardens and merely making their own food, free of salmonella problems and any concerns with pesticides.
The honey extraction demonstrations are almost always packed, with a few stragglers blocking the aisle to the rest of the culinary connection tables.
The Pennsylvania Beekeepers Association will hold more demonstrations on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Friday at 11 a.m., both at the culinary main stage.
